Speaker Zobair M. YOUNOSSI Chairman of the Global NASH Council, Professor and Chairman of Beatty Liver and Obesity Research Program, Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Global Center for Liver Outcomes & Policy Research at the Georgetown University School of Medicine

Dr. Zobair M. Younossi, MD, MPH, FACP, FACG, AGAF, FAASLD, is the Chairman of the Global NASH/MASH Council (GNC) and Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Global Center for Liver Outcomes & Policy Research at Georgetown University School of Medicine, Washington, DC, USA.

Dr. Younossi earned his medical degree from the University of Rochester School of Medicine, where he received the Alpha Omega Alpha award in 1989. He completed his postgraduate training in Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology and Hepatology at Scripps Clinic and Research Foundation, while earning his Master of Public Health degree with multiple honors, including the Hanlon Award and Outstanding Student Award, from San Diego State University.

He is the President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees of the Chronic Liver Disease Foundation (CLDF), a position he has held since 2018. He also serves as Chairman of the Global NASH/MASH Council. His current academic leadership includes his role as Professor of Medicine and Chairman of the Global Center for Liver Outcomes & Policy Research at Georgetown University School of Medicine.

Prior to joining Georgetown University, Dr. Younossi spent more than 25 years at Inova Health System, where he established and led major programs in liver disease and outcomes research. During his tenure at Inova, he served as Chairman of the Department of Medicine at Inova Fairfax Medical Campus (2011–2026) and President of Inova Medicine (2019–2026). He also served as Vice President of Research for Inova Health System (2007–2018), Chairman of Clinical Research (2019–2022), and held leadership positions on the Inova Health Foundation Board of Trustees. His tenure at Inova extended from 2000 to 2026.

He has also served as a member of the Board of the American College of Gastroenterology Institute and has represented the American Association for the Study of Liver Diseases (AASLD) and the American Gastroenterological Association (AGA) at various congressional meetings.

Dr. Younossi has more than 30 years of pioneering research experience in metabolic dysfunction-associated steatotic liver disease (MASLD/MASH), liver disease outcomes research, health-related quality of life, patient-reported outcomes and health economics. His research has contributed substantially to the understanding of the global burden and outcomes of MASLD/MASH and other chronic liver diseases.

He has authored more than 750 scientific articles, 3 books, 7 journal supplements, 26 book chapters and more than 1,000 abstracts presented at international scientific meetings. His work has received extensive international recognition, with an H-index exceeding 150 according to current Global NASH Council data.

Dr. Younossi's academic experience also includes editorial leadership in major hepatology journals, including serving as Co-Editor of Liver International and Associate Editor of the Journal of Hepatology, as well as serving on the editorial boards of numerous leading medical journals.

In addition to his research activities, Dr. Younossi has been extensively involved in medical education and has taught medical students, residents, postdoctoral researchers and fellows. He has served as Chair, Director and Faculty of numerous national and international scientific and CME programs and has delivered more than 500 presentations at scientific meetings.
